Wake Forest Honors Top Family Owned Businesses

The Wake Forest University Family Business Center and Business North Carolina recently a number of top family owned businesses at an event held last Thursday at the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte. The winners of this year's North Carolina Family Business of the Year Awards consisted of:

Biltmore in Asheville, N.C., was the Century Award winner. Since its creation in 1895, the Biltmore estate has been one of the largest employers in western North Carolina, with more than 1,800 employees. the house was first opened to the public in 1930, and the Vanderbilt family continues to support the mission of preserving Biltmore as a privately owned, profitable, dynamic working estate. 


Carolina Biological Supply in Burlington, N.C., was the large category winner. Thomas E. Powell Jr. started collecting plant and animal specimens at Elon College in the late 1920s. The Burlington company has more than 430 employees and supplies science supplementary teaching materials by catalog to 70,000 customers worldwide.

Brady in Greensboro, N.C., is the medium category winner. Don Brady started the company in 1962 with four employees and a truck. Today, Brady employs more than 300 people across North Carolina and is the exclusive Trane franchisee for commercial equipment in the central and eastern parts of the state.

Witherspoon Rose Culture in Durham, N.C., won the small category. The company, which designs and maintains rose gardens, opened in 1951 as a backyard operation. The company now has three shopping locations, six rose maintenance service hubs and 58 employees.
